My birthday was this past Saturday, and my gift I ordered for myself arrived today.
The above Dell is actually very good for what it is (the one they gave you free circa 2008), but has been replaced with the new one.
This is the first (modern) mechanical keyboard I’ve owned. Inspired by a coworker (who is as in to keyboards as we are into cars), I picked it out a while ago and it so far is well worth it. This one is made by ‘ikbc’ and has Cherry MX Blue switches. It’s a good thing I live alone, because it’s loud - but it is very pleasant to type on. I also like the weight, since it doesn’t move around while I type like other lighter/cheaper keyboards do.
Expect my already rambling and long-winded posts to only get worse.
In automotive news, I’ve almost caught up on all the stuff I had backlogged from spending a couple months travelling for work, so progress should resume soon on the Chevelle’s winter work. Still waiting on a final
price from the machine shop for the work on the block, though.

The old one, that Dell keyboard, is a good board.

I have the same exact keyboard and it’s excellent. Glad you like it so far.

I do really like it. I have one I’d worn almost all the letters off of just from use, and in January 2017 when I built my new desktop I unboxed the one I had in reserve new-in-box (pictured)
. It’s still in pretty good shape; both are now in the closet as backups. I’m somewhat tempted to take one into work as I don
’t
particularly care for the provided one there (it’s not bad, but it’s not really good, either)
.

Love me some blue switches. But I had to get some red ones to avoid my Swift and brutal murder at the office

10/10 choice in the new one though. ikbc’s always on my shortlist. They just keep knocking themselves off it due to the media keys. :(

There’s no way I could use this at work for the same reason, but it’s good at home. Unfortunately I do much more typing at work than home.

I like the ‘cal’ button since I do actually use the number pad / calculator combo a lot. The volume controls are useless to me though, since the computer is connected to a stereo and to adjust the volume I just, you know, turn the volume knob. Can probably come up with some software to make them do other things, but... what would I have them do?

Yeah, the problem I have is that I skip around tracks constantly while I’m doing stuff. And since t he ikbc stuff doesn’t have track controls, I always end up going “ehh... nah.” I love their styling so much though. They know how to execute ‘simple and tasteful,’ and that’s just gotten so hard to find.

Clean and simple is definitely rare these days, especially in computer hardware. Go try to find a quality motherboard that doesn’t also have enough lights to host
a disco!

Shit, I’d settle for quality motherboard PERIOD . Or even just one without false advertising.

Those Dell keyboards are about a dime a dozen.

Nice! My main work board has blues, they are fantastic.
And I just pulled this beast out for some late night coding. If you haven’t ever typed on a buckling spring, you’re missing out

Check out the Gon or Winkeyless brand Korean custom boards. You have to build them yourself, or find someone to build them.
Very simple, very tasteful.

Wayyy long ago I had an IBM PS-
ValuePoint with a Model
M2. It was very good. Sadly all that is long long gone. I miss W
indows 3.1 some days.

They do still make model Ms.
Unicomp bought the rights and patents from IBM
, they are
US made and pretty affordable overall. You can even get them with silly built in trackb
alls!

That’s pretty cool, how rare something like that was able to be bought and put back into production!

Welcome to team m echanical k eyboard! I made the switch this year, and have been very happy with the choice. I have a Razer Blackwidow with green switches (similar to MX blue ) at home and a Das Keyboard with Cherry MX browns at work. Enjoy it man!
